Zaphiro Technologies

Zaphiro Technologies is a spin-off of the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology of Lausanne (EPFL). It offers to electrical utilities SynchroGuard, the first synchrophasor-based monitoring and automation system that makes electrical grids more reliable and efficient while reducing costs.

Distribution grid is the part of the grid close to the consumers. Until now, electrical utilities have managed distribution grid without monitoring, but today the connection of renewable generators and the ever-increasing requirements on the quality of the power supply are forcing utilities to invest in grid modernization.

To help utilities facing these challenges, Zaphiro Technologies has developed SynchroGuard, a monitoring and automation system that makes the grid more efficient and reliable, while reducing costs. SynchroGuard is the first distribution-grid management system based on synchrophasors, which are very frequent and time-synchronized measurements. The concept consists in installing multiple devices that send measurements to a central controller that combines monitoring, optimization and fault management in a single software tool. We have recently filed a patent for a very accurate fault location method. A strong point is simplicity of installation, as we do not require the installation of invasive voltage sensors, just clamp-on current sensors that do not interfere with the grid.
